Turie Waananen, 95, formerly of Woodland Garden Apts, died Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2005 in St. Mary's Medical Center. He was born in Sparta, Minn., on April 24, 1909 to Adam and Margarita Waananen. Turie married Ailie E. Pelto on March 8, 1934 in Virginia, Minn. He was a U. S. Navy veteran serving in World War II. His love for water started much before the Navy, he sailed on the Great Lakes and was a commercial fisherman out of Grand Marais. He was a member of Family of God Lutheran Church, Two Harbors American Legion and was a Square Dance caller. His love for fishing came only second to his family and friends. He was a kind and gentle person and will be missed by all who knew him. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Lillian Bloomquist; and an infant daughter, Carol Margaret. Turie is survived by his wife, Ailie, of 70 years; three daughters, Janice (David) Barker of Pine River, Minn., Arlene (Doug) Carlson of Duluth and Bonnie (Matt) Belille of Wyoming, Minn.; 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.
