Merle G. Potter, 73, of Midland died Friday, Aug. 4, 2005, at Pinecrest.
The son of the late George and Lillian (Waananen) Potter was born Jan. 4, 1933, in St. Louis County, Minn. and graduated from Grand Marais High School. Merle served with the Merchant Maries prior to his service with the U.S. Army during World War II. After his service he then worked for the St. James Ore Mines. In Sept. of 1953, he married the former Irene Eleanor Paavola. As a young man Merle was an avid fisherman and outdoorsman, where he ran charter services on Lake Superior and enjoyed nature. Merle moved to the Midland area in 1977 and worked for the Painter's Local #1803 for over 33 years, retiring in 1995. On Nov. 21, 1978, he married the former Elizabeth Guthridge in Midland and moved to L'Anse in 2001 where he returned to his fishing, hunting and winter activities in northern Michigan, that he so much enjoyed all of his life.
Merle is survived by his wife Elizabeth Potter; sons Jon (Glenda) Potter of Wheeler, and Kevin Potter of Odessa, Mo.; a daughter Kathleen (Bill) Harris of Kansas City, Mo.; eight grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. He is also survived by his sisters Mildred Thoreson of Grand Marais, Minn., and Lillian (Honey) Eliason, husband Tom of Grand Marais, Minn., Patricia Holte, husband Darrell of Apache Junction, Ariz., and Marjorie "Margie" Nelson of Grand Marais, Minn.
Memorial services will be conducted at a later date. The Wilson MILLER Funeral Home, 4210 N. Saginaw Rd., Midland, MI 48640 is in charge of the funeral direction where there will be no visitation.
