OLIVER ELLSWORTH KENT
Oliver Ellsworth Kent, the oldest son of Oscar and Mary (Cochran) Kent, was born on January 5, 1919, and died October 26, 2004 at the Powell Oncology Center at Methodist Hospital in Des Moines.
He grew up and lived his entire life in Jackson Township in Lucas County. He was very proud to have graduated from Lucas High School in 1936.
He married Volores Lugar on February 8, 1941, in Princeton, Missouri. They were blessed with three children; Carla Bonita, Randall Lee and Lori Arlene.
Oliver loved the farm and preserving the soil by contour plowing and terracing. He was a lifelong steward of the land and loved seeing the green fields and trees.
Because of his great love of the farm, he served many years as an ASCS Committee man. He was also instrumental, along with other Lucas County farmers, in getting the Lucas County Hospital constructed. He was secretary of the hospital board for most of the time he served and would quickly tell you that the hospital was operated without the use of any property tax money for many years and that the note was paid off early.
He was a 50 year member of the Paul Revere Masonic Lodge No. 638 of Lucas.
Oliver was diagnosed with Lymphoma in July 2003. After nearly a year in remission, it returned in September 2004.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Roy and Harry, sister-in-law, Roberta Kent, brother-in-law, DeVerne Lugar, nephews, Marvin and Stephen Kent.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Volores, daughters, Carla Mongar and Lori Lockwood of Derby, and son, Randy Kent and special friend, LuAnn McGrane of Osceola. Brothers, Keith (Shirley) Kent of Lucas, Glenn (Lucy) Kent of Woodburn, sister-in-law, Glyda Kent of Chariton, and sister-in-law, Edith Lugar of Indianola, seven grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Masonic rites were held October 28, 2004 at the Fielding Funeral Home, with graveside service held October 29 at the Rose Hill Cemetery in rural Lucas County with the Rev. Silas Anderson officiating.
